We will miss you dearly, Professor Yashpal
On July 24, our country lost one of its doyens in
science
popularisation and its
education, Professor Yashpal. He was 91 years old. We in
Eklavya will always remember him as a truly special personality. He
had played a major role in supporting the formation of the
organisation, first while working in the Department of Science
& Technology (DST) and then in the University Grants Commission
(UGC). This was in addition to the part he had played in the
Hoshangabad Science Teaching Programme ever since the first 1972
teacher training in Rasulia (given inside this
link is his ‘Foreword’ for the Bal
Vaigyanik series of books). For some of our senior members he
was even more - a guide, a mentor, a pillar of support that one
could go to anytime. Every time we had approached him to come out
in our support he was eager and ready, even if it had meant
travelling to Hoshangabad or Bhopal or Ujjain or anywhere else.
And in a tragic twist of chance, on that same
day we lost former chairman of the Indian Space Research
Organisation (ISRO), UR Rao, and then on August 1, the renowned
molecular biologist and founder of the Centre for Cellular and
Molecular Biology (CCMB), PM Bhargava.
